Volunteer Referral Service
The Volunteer Service supports clients seeking volunteer employment. Our service specialises in recruitment and selection of volunteer staff. We take pride in placing the right person in the right job as well as meeting the needs of non profit organisations. The areas we cover include the Nepean Local Government Area (LGA) from St Marys to Penrith and Emu Plains; west to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains LGA and north to the Hawkesbury LGA. All non profit organisations that we refer clients to have been approved by Centrelink and these organisations carry volunteer insurance.

Non profit organisations who utilise volunteers can become a member of the Volunteer Referral Service for a small fee. The service will need to provide the Co-ordinator with information on their service and what role the volunteers will undertake. After this takes place the Co-ordinator will recruit volunteers that are appropriate for them.
How do I volunteer?
Please contact the Volunteer Referral Service on 4731 6523 to make an appointment with the Co-ordinator to discuss all areas of volunteering and also volunteering with the related services including Nepean Neighbour Aid and Community Visitors Scheme.
Hours of Operation
The Volunteer Referral Service is open on Monday, through Thursday from 9am to 4pm. There is an answering machine where the Co-ordinator will return your call or access via email address.

Unlike paid staff, volunteers are not covered by awards or work-place agreements.
Volunteers however do have rights, some which are enshrined in legislation and some which could be considered the moral obligations of an organisation involving volunteers. Volunteering Australia promotes the following as the basic rights of a volunteer.
As a volunteer you have the right:
- To work in a healthy and safe environment (refer various Occupational Health and Safety Act[s]);
- To be interviewed and employed in accordance with equal opportunity and anti- discrimination legislation;
- To be adequately covered by insurance;
- To be given accurate and truthful information about the organisation for which you are working;
- To be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses;
- To be given a copy of the organisations volunteer policy and any other policy that affects your work;
- Not to fill a position previously held by a paid worker;
- Not to do the work of paid staff during industrial disputes;
- To have a job description and agreed working hours;
- To have access to a grievance procedure;
- To be provided with orientation to the organisation;
- To have your confidential and personal information dealt with in accordance with the principles of the Privacy Act 1988; and
- To be provided with sufficient training to do your job.
